“Resisting Together”

Friday, May 1

8:00 pm – 9:15 pm Eastern (5pm-6:15 pm Pacific): Social Hour

  • After welcoming everyone to the conference, we will separate into break out rooms so that people will have a chance to meet other attendees. Each break out room will have a topic for discussion that will be predetermined. If you have a suggestion for a break out room topic, you can include it with your registration at the bottom of the form.

Saturday, May 2

11:00 am – 12:15pm (8am-9:15am): Rachel Cohen: A Lawyer Refusing to Pay for War and ICE

  • Rachel Cohen is a Chicago lawyer who very publicly proclaimed this spring that she would be refusing to pay about $8,000 in federal income taxes because of the actions of the US miliary and ICE. She now has over 264,000 followers on Instagram and her public resistance has been covered by many mainstream media outlets. We are very happy to have her join us and share her story.

Break

1:00 pm – 2:30 pm (10am-11:30a):

Concurrent Sessions for Newly Interested and Current War Tax Resisters

  • War Tax Resistance 101: An introduction to the why and how of this form of resistance, with discussion of potential consequences and resource referral. For people new to WTR or just getting started. Facilitated by Chrissy Kirchhoefer, NWTRCC Communications Consultant
  • War Tax Resistance 201: Updates, trends, and Q&A for current war tax resisters. With NWTRCC Coordinator Lincoln Rice and the expert resisters in attendance!

Break

3:00 pm – 4:30 pm (12:00pm-1:30pm): The Morality of Taxpaying in America

5:00 pm – 6:30 pm (2:00pm-3:30pm): Current Trends in War Tax Resistance

  • This session will feature speakers discussing how they are working to spread war tax resistance in our changing world. Brian founded TaxStrikeNV.com in Reno and will share the process of starting a new group and spreading the word. Em recently took over management of New England War Tax Resistance and started the group’s first Instagram page. Kima with the Oregon Community Peace Fund will discuss how they have adapted their outreach and how they offer war tax resistance workshops, which have been well attended.
