2024 began as a very busy year for NWTRCC. The invasion of Gaza had just occurred a few months earlier and requests for war tax resistance workshops skyrocketed. NWTRCC was offering about two war tax resistance workshops every single week of tax season. This included sessions with Healthcare Workers for Palestine Bay Area and the National Lawyers Guild. For the latter session, lawyer Peter Goldberger discussed legal issues surrounding payment of taxes used for genocide.
NWTRCC worked closely with two newly formed groups, We the People and the Tax Resistance Collection, in promoting war tax resistance with younger people who were concerned about US weapons being used in Gaza. Interest in war tax resistance stayed strong all year as the atrocities in Gaza continued. 2023 began as a typical year for NWTRCC. We held a War Tax Resistance 101 on Zoom in January, a counselor training in February, and a social media workshop in March. In October, NWTRCC offered a panel, “War Tax Resistance Beyond Thoreau” at the Peace History Conference at Gwynedd Mercy University.
The rest of the year continued like normal until the invasion of Gaza at the end of October. As it became clear the invasion would be sustained and horrific, the NWTRCC office became inundated with requests to offer WTR 101 sessions online.
