“Organizing Resistance for Peace”

Friday, April 30

8:00 pm – 9:30 pm (5p-6:30p Pacific): Social Hour

This session will be composed of two separate 30-minute breakout sessions. In each breakout session, participants will be randomly placed in groups of 5 people. Each group will be given a set of questions aimed toward folks getting a chance to know one another and their own resistance stories. Normally, when we gather in person, folks get a chance to chat with people they do not know during breaks and meals. This session provides an opportunity for participants to chat with one another, something that is often missing in large online gatherings.

Saturday, May 1

11:00 am – 1:00p (8a-10a): Panel on the New Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons & Paths Forward for Resistance

  • This session will feature three anti-nuclear activists who will share their thoughts on the new treaty and speak to the future of the anti-nuclear movement, which was a driving force for many people who became war tax resisters during the 1970s and 1980s. The panel will feature Mari Inoue (an attorney and cofounder of the Manhattan Project for a Nuclear-Free World), Dr. Linda Richards (historian of science and a grassroots activist since the 1986 Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament who represented the WILPF Disarm Committee in international meetings), and Jack Cohen Joppa (cofounder of the Nuclear Resister newsletter in 1980, which continues to provide information and support for imprisoned anti-nuclear and anti-war activists).

2:00 pm – 4:00 pm (11a-1p): Panel on Organizing with Younger War Tax Resisters

  • This session will feature three younger war tax resisters who are involved in organizing. They will share their own stories and ideas for inviting younger activists into the WTR movement. Currently, the panel includes Lindsey Britt (Vermont), Jerry Maynard (Texas) and Allison McGillivray (Oregon). Bring your own stories and ideas!

5:00 pm – 7:00 pm (2p-4p): Concurrent Sessions for Newly Interested and Current War Tax Resisters

  • War Tax Resistance 101: An introduction to the why and how of this form of resistance, with discussion of potential consequences and resource referral. For people new to WTR or just getting started. Facilitated by Bill Glassmire, Corvallis, Oregon, who became a WTR in 1990 to resist US militarism & Chrissy Kirchhoefer, NWTRCC Communications Consultant
  • War Tax Resistance 201: Updates, trends, and Q&A for current war tax resisters. With NWTRCC Coordinator Lincoln Rice and the expert resisters in attendance!
