July was a momentous month for Henry David Thoreau. He was born on July 12, 1817, and spent his famous night in jail in July 1846. It's a perfect time to remember Thoreau and carry on his legacy by supporting the war tax resistance movement. Help Bill, Erica, Ruth and Rick reach our goal of $1,000 for NWTRCC by July 31!
Our first ever Google Hangout, “War Tax Resistance for a Better World”, is now our first ever podcast. Listen to three panelists talk about their war tax resistance and how their actions contribute to creating the world they want to live in. You can subscribe to the podcast feed at that link too.
Should I Stop Paying My Taxes on Moral Grounds? An online interview with David Gross on Radical Personal Finance, including his personal story of war tax resistance, history, skills and tactics, and the bright side of refusing to pay for war.
Hobby Lobby and WTR
There’s been a lot of online chatter since the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision from all kinds of people considering whether they can refuse to pay for the #1 thing they abhor — war. While the decision itself explicitly excludes allowance for nonpayment of taxes, the discussion is ongoing, such as this Salon.com article by a writer with a Quaker background, or this one on truth-out.org. Add your comments and link to nwtrcc.org to keep the discussion going.
Beyond the Rally
Check out Google Hangout #2 “Beyond the Rally.” Presenters from NWTRCC, the Center on Conscience and War, and the National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund, discuss their approaches to war resistance that go beyond the antiwar march and rally to individual and collective actions to resist war.
