Sunday morning, May 4, is an open organizational business meeting for NWTRCC.
PROGRAM
Representatives of war tax resistance groups from around the country will attend
and join local war resisters as presenters and facilitators for panels, group
discussions, and workshops. The schedule below is subject to change. Please
check the website or call for an updates.
Friday: 5 pm Arrival, registration - 6:00 Dinner - 7:30 Welcome, Introductions, Stories of Resistance, WarTax Boycott
Saturday: 8 am Breakfast - 9:00 Intros, welcome, and small group sessions on war tax boycott/personal choices - 10:30 "To Pay or Not to Pay" video and discussion - Noon Lunch - 1:00 Skills Workshops (concurrent) Introduction to WTR; How to Talk to Someone About WTR - 2:30 Panel followed by small group discussions. Topics include: Financial Support for Individual War Tax Resisters; IRS Activity; and Strengthening WTR network and Support for Organizers - 4:30 Birmingham resistance stories - 5:45 Closing. Evening unscheduled at this point.
Sunday: 9 am NWTRCC Business meeting, boycott evaluation, international meeting, budget, video project progress. All welcome! - Noon Lunch
LOCATION: Birmingham, founded in 1871 during Reconstruction, was built on coal mining and the steel industry. Today the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) with its medical center and teaching hospitals is the states biggest employer. The Civil Rights Institute and museum keep alive the history of the struggle for the end of Jim Crow during the 1960s. The Institute also serves as a venue for continuing education about human rights and other struggles at home and throughout the world. The Friday and Saturday program will be held at Birmingham Friends Meeting, 4413 5th Ave. S. Birmingham War Tax Objectors is an affiliate of NWTRCC. The Sunday Meeting will be at the Waters’ home.
TRAVEL: Birmingham is served by buses, Amtrak (http://www.amtrak.com ), and flights to Birmingham International Airport (http://www.bhamintlairport.com ).
HOUSING: Housing is with local hosts.
MEALS: The program begins with dinner on Friday and ends with lunch on Sunday. All meals are simple, vegetarian meals. Everyone will be asked to share in preparation or cleanup.
COSTS: $15 registration fee in advance for the full weekend for those who can afford it; those attending for part of the weekend are asked to make a contribution in advance or on site.. No one will be turned away.
